“It is just the Mets’ luck, stuck in the division of dynasties. The Atlanta Braves tormented them from 1995 to 2005, rolling to 11 consecutive National League East titles. The Philadelphia Phillies took over in 2007, piling on the misery, and have won the last four. A fifth is expected next season, as the addition of Cliff Lee practically instructs the rest of the league to abandon all hope ye who enter Citizens Bank Park.

Hope is what the Mets will hold fast to in what should be a transitional 2011 season, as their new regime tries to purge onerous contracts, institute an energetic style of play and reinvigorate the fan base. But a tangible — and, some would say, more realistic — prize should be within reach as soon as 2012, when the Mets’ path to the playoffs could become somewhat easier because of postseason expansion.

Adding an extra wild-card berth in each league is less a possibility at this point than an inevitability”

Mets’ Rebuilding Could Get Boost if Playoffs Expand

I hate the idea of an additional wild card, even if it helped the Mets chances of getting into the playoffs.

The NBA and NFL playoffs are ridiculous, too many teams get in. Unfortunately, this is going to happen because owners want more money, it’s just a matter of when.

“I’m realizing what it is to be a normal person … It’s most likely that I don’t return to active baseball …but honestly I don’t know if I’ll definitively announce my retirement.” —

Pedro Martinez on hanging ‘em up.

This can’t be too surprising considering that Martinez did not pitch during the 2010 season. If he does decide to retire, it will put an end to one of the greatest pitchers and most entertaining players one will ever see. You can put Pedro’s 1999 and 2000 seasons up against anyone and Martinez will probably come out on top.

My hope is that Martinez pulls a Rickey Henderson and waits years before formally announcing his retirement allowing all of us to continue to discussing Martinez as a possible back of rotation replacement for another five to ten years. Baseball is just more fun with Pedro in it.

In all seriousness:

luapula:

From the Mets perspective, it makes playing the Phillies more unpleasant in the short term and gives another jersey option for all the lovely Philadelphians that visit CitiField when they’re in town. Otherwise, 2011 was essentially a reloading years regardless. Carry on and don’t get too caught up in what happens in 2011, it probably isn’t and wasn’t going to be “the year.”

The Phillies have a ton of money committed in older players, and there’s a good chance a couple of those contracts may look catastrophically bad before it’s said and done (Ryan Howard is well on his way). Basically their entire roster is over 30 outside of Cole Hamels and Dominic Brown, so they’d better hope there aren’t any injuries or unfortunate playoff upsets (like the 2010 NLCS) in the cards. Philadelphia fans will be pretty much unbearable, but they were pretty much unbearable anyway.

The bright side for Yankee fans? You bid against yourselves for Derek Jeter despite all the posturing and saw the Red Sox get Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford. You also still have a billion dollars to spend next offseason, and you can always call WFAN and complain about how Cliff Lee wasn’t man enough to do what AJ Burnett did and don the sacred pinstripes. Not all bad.

My favorite portion:

“I’m very familiar with the blogosphere, and how it makes connections with fans… People are going to form their own opinions, but if you’ve heard from me, it’ll be on the basis of direct communication. I don’t mind spending the time. In a sense, you guys probably reflect the most passionate elements of the fan base. If I’m right about that, it’s more important to be in contact with you all than the rest of the media.”

Welcome to the New New York Mets.
