It’s time to think about 2010, of course - just as Johan Santana is -but as I contemplated the Mets’ future, I thought more about their past. Particularly this blog post, in which I referenced a paragraph that Ted Berg wrote:
“Minaya took the correct approach to the 2009 season based on the elements that cost the team in 2008, and to some extent, that makes sense. But winning last year’s battle every offseason while ignoring next year’s war will often catch up with a team.”
Berg wrote that over the offseason. Pretty, pretty good call. And that’s wisdom the Mets must keep in mind as they plan for 2010.
They have to learn how to buy low and sell high. To project ahead and act accordingly, rather than reflecitng back and acting accordingly.
To acquire the players who will help them win in 2010, rather than those who WOULD HAVE helped them win in 2009.
