In a cursed sports fan’s life, this fall has been particularly awful. As a Mets fan, I had to sit (literally, because I was barely able to stand) through a dry heave inducing Yankees-Phillies World Series and now live through my city dry humping its favorite child once again.
Meanwhile, the 1-6 Knicks may change their name to the Washington Generals (and don’t even have a draft pick to make up for this disgrace of a season) and the Jets have dropped some very winnable games.
But there’s one sports victory that I can celebrate in earnest: The Tokyo Yomiuri Giants have won the 2009 Japan Series!
My favorite Japanese baseball team (along with the Fukuoka Hawks) defeated the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters in six games to take home their 21st Nippon Professional Baseball title.
Led by catcher, captain and Series MVP Shinnosuke Abe, slugging third baseman Michihiro Ogasawara, young stud shortstop Hayato Sakamoto and spark plug centerfielder Tetsuya Matsumoto, the Giants finished a job they started last season when they fell in seven games to Seibu.
Some people may object to my liking the Giants, citing their nickname of the Yankees of Japan. That’s because they’re popular and successful and from the country’s biggest city, but the truth is, they were modeled on the then-New York Giants baseball club, which means they share a common ancestor with the Mets. Which makes this a family affair for me.
I’m wearing my Yomiuri Giants hat as we speak, and man does it feel good to be a winner. Let’s hope the Golden Age of Giants baseball that Shinnosuke Abe predicted dawns in the Land of the Rising Sun.
