Say what you will about psychology and the human condition but most people are surprisingly forgiving if you’re honest, admit your mistakes and explain yourself a little bit.
Andy Pettitte and Manny did it, why can’t McGwire? Remember those painful hearings that Roger Clemens and Alberto Gonszales went through? They were so painful to watch because the guys we’re crooks and liars and wanted to defend their position until the bitter end. They’d go to the grave swinging for the fences, trying to spell lies t-r-u-t-h.
McGwire isn’t the first person in sports to use drugs that make players perform better. As long as there have been sports there have been athletes trying to make themselves better by playing in the grey (and the red) areas of the rule book. As long as there have been humans there have been those who will do whatever it takes to get a leg up, legal or not.
McGwire is 46 years old and assuming the steroids he allegedly took didn’t do too much damage to his body, it’s safe to assume he’s got another 20 years at least in his life. Why not get the money off his back, make himself look bad for a few weeks and then breathe a sigh of relief when the media forgets all about him as another star comes up positive for HGH?
