Torre visits Mets, original managerial post…
Joe Torre’s managerial career gained its luster when he guided the Yankees in the Bronx beginning in 1996. But it got its start about 10 miles down the road in Flushing, when he was the Mets’ skipper from 1977-81.
Torre, a native of Brooklyn, returned home Monday, when his Dodgers — coming off a series loss to the Nationals after a 1-0 loss in Sunday’s rubber game — were scheduled to begin a three-game set against the Mets and make their only stop of the season at spacious Citi Field.
The rain that preserved the Mets’ five-inning 1-0 Sunday night win over the Braves stayed in the New York area, washing out Monday’s game and forcing a twi-night doubleheader that is slated for Tuesday. Torre will stay on the regular starting schedule and pitch righty Hiroki Kuroda in Game 1 against Johan Santana, and knuckleballer Charlie Haeger against Oliver Perez in the nightcap.
In Torre’s previous two seasons as the Dodgers’ skipper, his club went 8-5 against the Mets and 3-3 at Citi Field. In six games last year, Los Angeles swept New York at Dodger Stadium and took two of three on the road.
