A shame that RA Dickey had to waste such a good performance because there was no stopping Tim Lincecum. At least if Dickey had given up ten runs he could just say it wasn’t in the cards. Last night was more like a cruel reminder of the bizarre twists of fate.
Lincecum’s line: 9 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K and it was his fourth career complete game shutout. Maybe the break did Lincecum some good as his velocity and command looked better than it has since the beginning of the season.
The only run for the Giants came courtesy Pablo Sandoval and it came on a double off the right field wall. If you’re superstitious, you can blame Gary Cohen as he spent the at-bat talking about how the Mets had held Sandoval to a 1-14 line by throwing fastballs up and in. Dickey threw one and Sandoval crushed it.That’s either Cohen’s fault or Dickey’s fault for only having an 83 mph fastball.
Carlos Beltran went 1-4 in his return and did not run out his final ground ball in the ninth. Whether due to injury or lack of effort, it’s something the Mets should look into.
Tough to get too upset about a loss like that one. Dickey was outstanding and you are going to have to get awful lucky to beat the two-time Cy Young winning Freak.
Beltran is back, and hopefully Reyes isn’t on the shelf too long. Things are coming together.
